Before your daughter baby-sits for other children, it's important
that you know the family for whom she is baby-sitting. That acquaintance
could be indirect; for example, a family that is known by a mutual
friend. If your child is inexperienced, suggest that she baby-sit
free of charge while the family is at home at first so she can
get to know the children. Be sure your child asks for contact
numbers before the parents leave their home, and if it's the first
time for your child, you may want to reassure her she can call
you if she's worried. Most communities provide baby-sitting courses
for children age 12 or older. Your daughter will feel more confident
and will be better prepared if she's taken such a course.
Caring for children is a serious responsibility. You can encourage
your child to take on that responsibility only if you feel confident
she has the maturity to handle it. Baby-sitting is not reserved
for girls alone. There are many boys who are capable of caring
for children.
