A:
Anti-depressants have not undergone clinical trials for children,
although some of the major drug manufacturers are doing this now.
Some children do have biochemical imbalances and would probably
benefit from anti-depressants, but I tend to be very cautious
in their use.
If the counselor has done therapy with
you and your child and still recommends medication, you could
try some on a trial basis with careful medical supervision for
any side effects. I can't make any diagnosis or recommendations
through a column, so the important issue is your confidence in
your own counselor, who knows much more about your daughter than
I do. If you're uncomfortable about your counselor's recommendation,
you could always go for a second opinion.
