Obese Daughter

Q:

Dear Dr. Sylvia,

First of all, thank you for contributing to the success of countless girls. Your book "See Jane Win" will help parents everywhere raise successful, mentally healthy girls. I do have one question, though. How can parents help their obese daughters maintain a level of self-esteem that allows them to rise above the catcalls, achieve their goals, and be successful?

A:

Overweight girls do indeed struggle in our society. If your daughter is obese, aside from the social and emotional problems, she requires some guidance for healthy eating and exercise. Both physical and mental activity will help her self-esteem. Consider your daughter's strengths, and encourage her involvement in extracurricular activities that permit her to develop skills and friendship. Also encourage her to volunteer to help others, particularly younger children who may be handicapped or who need tutoring or a "big sister" who cares about them. Young people who feel needed by others always feel better about themselves and more grateful for what they have.
