Who
among us has not struggled with the complexities of platonic male/female
relationships? This delightful romantic comedy, directed by P.J.
Hogan, highlights those complexities in an original and wacky
way.

Julianne (Julia
Roberts), funny, lovable, clever yet vulnerable, is a food critic
who is devastated to discover that Michael (Dermot Mulroney),
her former boyfriend, who is now her best friend, is about to
get married to Kimmy (Cameron Diaz), a wealthy and perfectly beautiful
young woman.
So where was
Julianne through all those nine years of a beautiful platonic
friendship, with Michael hinting that he really loved her? Only
after he drops the shoe about Kimmy does she admit the truth to
herself.
Julianne travels
to Chicago, ostensibly to her "best friend's wedding",
but really planning to break up the engagement and to tell Michael
she loves him. Well, without really saying it, though, and that's
where the fun comes in.
It is great howl
watching Julianne's crazy schemes come to naught, and quite touching
to see her struggling with her poignant feelings for her former
boyfriend. Her real platonic and equally wacky friend and editor,
George, (Rupert Everret) is the loving gay confidant who encourages
her schemes - up to a point.
The script, by
Ronald Bass, will keep you in suspense till the end, and wondering
which girl Michael will choose.
